What the rail beside your work is, what you can ask it, and how to take back control.
What the rail is
Tally Copilot is the panel down the left of every screen in the app. It is not a search box and it is not a chatbot bolted on the side: it can do the work in Tally with you, on the job you have open.
It is open by default. Collapse Tally Copilot tucks it away, the arrow brings it back, and you can drag its edge to make it wider or narrower.
It knows where you are
Under its name the rail shows what it is currently looking at, and that changes as you move around: your projects, this project, a drawing, an area, setup, your account.
It also tells you what it can do on that screen, in its own words. On the projects list, for example: “I can create and update projects, and open key pages in Tally.”
Ask it for something
- Type into the box at the bottom, which reads “Ask Tally Copilot to do something”, and choose Send.
- Or tap one of the three suggestions on an empty chat. They are real requests, and tapping one sends exactly that text.
- Watch it work. The rail shows its progress as it goes, and you can open the detail to see every step it took rather than just the outcome.
The three suggestions are:
Create a new project and open its drawings. It makes the job and lands you on the page where you drop your files.
Take off the plumbing services on a drawing. With a drawing already open this becomes “on this drawing”. This one is the real thing: reading the sheet, setting its scale, tracing runs and counting fixtures.
Import pricing and create a takeoff template. Pricing you give Copilot lands in your price book, and the template is created for real.
You can hand it files
The paperclip beside the message box attaches files to what you send, up to ten per message. Images, PDFs, spreadsheets, text files and model files are all accepted, so a supplier price list can go straight into the conversation.
Taking back control
While Copilot is working it drives the app, so the screen does not answer to your clicks. That is deliberate, and it is not a lock-in: the app tells you what is happening and offers a way out on the same line. Choose Take over, or press Esc, and the run stops and the app is yours again.
Take over before you switch chats or start a new one, for the same reason.
Keeping your conversations
New chat starts a fresh one, and Chat history lists the ones you have had, so you can go back to what Copilot did on a job last week rather than explaining it again.
What it will not touch
Copilot is walled off from your account and your money, and says so rather than letting you find out by being refused: “I don’t have access to billing or account settings, and I won’t act on them.” Billing, subscriptions and account settings stay with you.
Check its work, the same as anyone else’s
Everything Copilot does lands where your own work lands: measurements on the drawing, lines on the worksheet, rows in the price book. Read them the way you would read a new estimator’s takeoff, and look at flagged items for anything it inferred or could not measure.
